Roxan Hurjui story on Things Friends Should Know

Rebuilding and reclaiming your career in a new country

Roxana Hurjui rebuilt and reinvented her career, moving from journalism to corporate communications, while starting over in a new country. Thirteen years ago, she moved from Romania to the UK, stepping into a new chapter of her life and becoming a first-time mum at the same time. Here’s her story for other communications professionals navigating their own journeys or redefining their path and purpose.

Hi, Roxana. Can you tell us about your early career as a journalist? What drew you to storytelling in the first place?

I’ve always loved being where things happen, talking to people, hearing their stories, and bringing news to people. As a journalist, you’re constantly chasing the story and trying to figure out what makes people tick, to get their attention and challenge minds. That’s what hooked me to storytelling. It forces you to always think: how will this land? How can I get better at making people trust what I’m saying?

You now work in corporate communications. How did you navigate that shift from journalism, and how have you found it?

It helped a lot that I’d been a journalist. You learn to pay attention, fact-check everything, and keep your antenna up for industry news so you don’t miss what matters. You had to think on your feet and trust your instincts, but I really valued how journalism taught me to listen carefully. That definitely made the transition smoother.

You moved to the UK from Romania 13 years ago. What was that transition like, both personally and professionally?

Really tough, to be honest. But I wouldn’t change a thing because the struggle and experience made me who I am. I didn’t have family around, and there were moments when I wanted to give up, but I just wanted my family to feel proud of me.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in rebuilding your career in a new country?

The emotional and financial struggles were real. But I always kept my dream alive. When times got really hard and I didn’t know where the next pay check was coming from, I knew I didn’t have the luxury of giving up.

How did you find your footing in the UK?

I looked for roles that would help build me professionally. I learned from people in the industry. I took courses, found my niche and saw what worked for me and what didn’t. And I surrounded myself with people who helped me grow. I asked for feedback constantly and just kept trying to get better every day.

What advice would you give others trying to relaunch or pivot their careers in a new place?

Never stop learning, build a personal brand, stay curious and never stop believing.

How did becoming a mum shape your career journey, or change your perspective on work-life balance (if there’s such a thing)?

I was lucky to have support from my biological mum, my mother-in-law, and my husband when my daughter was born. They got my passion and my drive. They’ve always been cheerleaders for me. I think you’ve got to build your career around love, friendship, and work. Being a mum teaches you to prioritise differently.

Were there moments you felt you had to choose between career growth and family life, and how did you handle that?

Every day. But I try not to beat myself up about it. I now have the mindset that I’m doing what I love, and I push myself to be the best I can be.

What support networks helped you during this time?

We have some amazing people in our industry! I asked tons of questions to help me when things got tough. You need to lean on your support network because you need good people to guide you.

You’ve started to create a platform, The Revolution Hub? Tell us about it.

I wanted it to be a place where other communication professionals could find resources to help with their careers and unlock their potential. It’s a community where people can come together for influence and inspiration.

Looking back at your journey and transition, what are you most proud of?

That I never gave up! It took a few years, but when you really love your craft, whether it’s storytelling, communications or something else, you pour your heart and soul into making it happen.

Finally, what’s next for you?

Staying curious. There are always new things to learn, and I love that!
